I'm trying to find any information on naming conventions for computer name. Since we have so many users, about 150 computers, using peoples names have become cumbersome. When people leave, we have to change the computer name. Is there a definitive system for naming computers? What is everyone else using for computer name?

One that seems to work is a station Identification. ie...
The receptionist PC is call reception. If you have more than 1 receptionist then reception1, reception2 etc..
Any way if the person is in programming cal them programmer1 programmer2 and so on. Hardware is the same hardware1 and so on. This works good for lots of users. But this is just my point of view. (I use this system) James Collins

We use the following convention:

In Corporate headquarters where we have direct access to pcs we use: FirstName & Last Name Initial (for example: RogerE)

In branches we use: MGRXX for the manager. Where xx is branch number
and WXX01 , 02 , 03, etc. where xx is the branch number for workstations.

This seems to work well for us.

Roger

First Initial last name for us.
ie..
"BGates". If there's more than one Bill Gates..it would be BiGates.

For computername, using the same convention with "PC" or 'LT" after it is unbelievably helpful in locating users, and quickly mapping drives without a reference chart.

BGatesPC for a desktop, and BGatesLT for his laptop..
that's what I use.
