When callers get our names attendant they are prompted to enter the persons first name followed by the pound sign, such as: DAWN#

However we have three Dawns here so the system voice then prompts, "Enter more characters followed by the pound sign. If you completed entering the LAST name then enter the FIRST name followed by the pound sign."

The problem with that system announcement is that the user just finished entering the person's FIRST, not the LAST name as the announcement suggests. It works just fine if you continue with the persons last name: SMITH# but the announcement is confusing callers.

Can I, 1) change it so users search by LAST name first (then the systme greeting would be correct), or 2) easily change that system greeting to say something like, "Multiple users match that name. Enter the LAST name followed by the pound sign."

[Intuity Audix with a Definity G3Si v11]

Option 1 is the correct option.
You cannot change the hard coded system prompts.
The voice mail will search the index according to how the user names were entered.
If there is only one name that name will be used.
Therefore enter both names with a comma between the names with the first entry being the primary search index.
example:
last name, first name...voicemail will search last name then first name if there are duplications.
First name, last name...voicemail will search first name then last name if there are duplications.

You will have to change your main AA greeting to instruct callers to enter persons last name.

Sounds like I'll be busy changing all 312 names in Audix from FIRST LAST to LAST <comma> FIRST for awhile! Thanks for your help :)

I believe that u can go in an modify the annoucement file of the Intuity(If u are using the names attdt of the Intuity rather than the names attdt in vectors in the pbx.

Creating a Custom Announcement Set
Create a custom announcement set so you can use it as a base for changing your system’s
announcements. This step lets you keep the standard announcement sets in their original
state so you can use them again if necessary.
CAUTION:
If you might upgrade your system in the future, consider the following:
n If you customize the standard (or terse) set rather than to create a custom
announcement set, you lose all customization during the upgrade.
n Custom announcements from your original system are not automatically
moved to and activated in the upgraded system. In fact, the old custom
announcement set may not make sense in the context of the new features.
n Standard fragments that you re- recorded are moved to the new system and
placed in the appropriate announcements.

Be aware that if u don't answer a question, I usually will not continue to help u. Please leave a post on how u fixed the problem too.
