I have found that one of my phones (M2008) displays the user's name FOLLOWED BY a colon and the contents of the DES field. I use teh DES filed to hold the jack number. I made test calls to my display phone (M2616) and a few others, and the DES always appears. When I call from OTHER phones to my M2616, I only see the NAME, with no DES. With a printout of the phone config, I have scoured the NTP's (mainly LD 11), looking at each mnemonic, one at a time. I must be missing the answer!

This is caused by the settings in the CPND data block. What has happened is that the information in the DES field of each extension TN is also being displayed. This reduces the space on the display for long names causing part of the name to disappear.
The normal setting is to only show the name but it is possible to show the DES and the name.
The CPND block will have DES set to YES. You will need to change it to NO

To change this setting using overlay LD 95 the procedure is:
REQ CHG
TYPE CPND
CUST 0
CNFG
MXLN
STAL
DES NO
Now press the enter key until the data block updates and REQ is returned.

he's right, ld 95 prt names, is you look in the index of prompts, des appears in a dozen or so loads, 10 11 14 16 17, make sense, the only way you could have every found that was to note that it appears in ld 95, page 972

There must be more to it. I did LD 95, PRT, CPND and I do see that DES is set to YES. But why don't my other 300+ phones display the DES? Why just this one???

And, Yes, they ALL have an entry in their individual DES fields. None of them is blank.

I figured it out. The feature in LD 95 has to do with MADN!
The DN involved appears on another phone, but non-prime. Thank you to zog99, johnpoole and mluckie1. While mluckie1 was typing a reply, I was looking at NTP and testing with ANOTHER MADN phone. DES was displayed by this second example!

good catch everyone, btw des can not be blank on a set, (try it)
