Was at a client site creating a new user account and mailbox. The mailbox appeared in system manager a few minutes later. When i tried adding the email account to outlook 2003 (exchange account) i got a name resolution error. This has now happened a couple of times at different companies.

I know it is not an RPC issue. Able to access the mailbox via OWA and if i add an email account for an exisiting user the name resolves with no problems.

At another site i deleted the new account, recreated a new account and mailbox then successfully added the exchange email account in outlook.

This time, i tried the same procedure but the name does not resolve.

Is this something typical with Exchange 2003? Have never had this many problems setting up accounts and it has now happened 3 times.

Thanks

Did notice just now that if you try to send the email account an internal email it does not find the user in the global address list.

Turn off Cached mode and you should be good. Rebuild the Offline Address Book which is what is used instead of the GAL when in cached mode.

Also, a similar bug was fixed in Exchange SP1 make sure you are up to date on SP level. Exchange is on SP2 now and SBS on SP1.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

See if you can access the account via OWA.

Yes account can login via OWA and can view mailbox but others cannot send to the account in question as the internal account is not listed in the GAL.

Go into ESM and see if the account has an email address. If not, go to RECIPIENTS>RECIPIENT UPDATE SERVICE and right click on the RECIPIENT UPDATE SERVICE (DOMAIN) and UPDATE NOW. Do the same for the ENTERPRISE. If that doesn't fix the problem within a few minutes, right click on them again and REBUILD.

Thanks 58. After forcing the updates i can now search the GAL for this user. Will add the email account this weekend and should be fine now that the GAL is resolving the name.
