Ok, so last night I was listening to my Winamp playlist and everything was just peachy. Today, after leaving my computer on all night, I go to start winamp and it doesn't work. I checked my drive and the entire folder where I keep my mp3's was completely gone. I had approximately 320 different songs which amounted to a little over a GB. I have also noticed that that additional space was freed up on my drive, telling me that the files are indeed deleted. However, I also noticed that an additional GB was available but I don't know what it was that was deleted. The problem is that I have no idea how this could have happened. I have a cable modem but I also have a firewall installed so I wouldn't think anybody would have been crafty and stupid enough to hack in just to delete my mp3's. I ran 2000's version of scandisk in case there was a file system error but it didn't help. I have the songs on CD but it's a lot of work to go through and copy and convert everything again but it can be done so I'm really not interested in some expensive shop that will recover the files for me.
So my questions are:
1) Has anyone heard of some sort of virus floating around that could have done this?
2) Since I haven't written anything to the disk, the songs are obviously still there. Is there any sort of utility that can scan my disk and somehow magically undelete stuff?
3) Does Windows 2000 (my OS) have some sort of delete log so that I can see what was deleted and when?
Thanks in advance for any help. Justin
