Hi guys! I have a really serious problem here...

Umm my system doesn't start!

when i turn it on, it functions normally...

the black screen telling me all about my system and stuff.. yadda yadda... but when windows 98 starts up... All i get is my WALLPAPER!

I cannot, Right click the desktop, there is no shortcuts on my screen, the start menu is GONE. and the only thing that i can get on my screen is when i do the control+alt+delete, and i get that processes list, and all i see are 4 THINGS. I wrote them down maybe you guys know what they are.

msg32

msgloop

sbserv

hidsdrv

this is what i see... PLEASE HELP ME!!

thanks!

Can you get into safe mode? While you are booting - after the first post screen but before Windows begins to load hit F8 until you get a screen giving the option to boot into safe mode. If you can - tell us. If you can start the machine in Safe Mode, try running the System File Checker. Might be able to correct the problem if those files are missing or corrupt.

As far as the processes screen that you described - it's missing two things that have to be there - Explorer, and Systray. What the other things are I don't know - I'm sure someone might -

system file checker?

and yes i can run it in safe mode, but i cannot do anything. when i do the control alt delete, i do not see any programs in the list at all.

and thee is no start button or anything.

thanks

i put in a windows 98 backup disk and then the computer started up with the windows 98 setup menu, and i clicked on start program with no cd rom support.

Then i got some message: the following file is currpt or missing, "command.com" then it says type the command "eg,:/windows/command.com

and then thats all it says

I restarted it again and i did the control alt delete thing and then i saw some new words in the list.

1.<unknown>
2.Mprexe
3.msgrsv32 )not responding)

those two are popping up along with the other ones i said earlier

An article found on the net:

2001.5 MsgSrv32 Error under Windows98
On Tue, 27 March 2001, OC wrote: It started about a week ago when my PC just freeze when it starts up. Then I will do a ctrl+alt+delete, it shows me that 'msgsrv32(not responding)', I click on end task. Then my PC is usable again.

Msgsrv32.exe is a program (Windows 32-bit Message Server) that performs several background functions, including the following:

Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown.
Run the shell program (usually Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond.
Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system.
Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files.
Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled.
Play the system startup and shutdown sounds.
It looks like your problem may be occurring under one or several of the following scenarios:

Msgsrv32 Errors with Screen Savers:
Some programs respond poorly to power management commands especially Screen Savers, try disabling Power Management if the computer hangs with Msgrsv32 errors after sitting for a while.
Msgsrv32 Errors with a Sound Blaster Card:
Windows may boot up just fine but any time you go to use a program or component which uses audio causes General Protection Faults (GPFs). This may occur from loading the drivers from the CD after windows has already detected the card and installed drivers, loading them from the CD when this occurs causes the installation program to replace some of the files with Windows 3.1 files, causing incompatibility and GPFs. Remove the Sound Blaster card from the device manager and then use the Add New Hardware Wizard and use the drivers supplied by Creative Labs. You may also have to edit your SYSTEM.INI FILE and remove references to SB16AUX, DRV, SB16AUD, DRV AND SBAWE32, DRV.
Additional information about this problem can be found at Microsoft¹s technical support site

a friend of mines said that I should run some kind of anti-virus program though the MS-DOS thing and it will run on a floppy disk, is this true or what?
