My parents just got this gateway computer, it has windows 98 64mbs of ram, 700mhz.. Its having some problems, I am really puzzled about.. After about 5 or 10 minute of starting it up no sound will play.. I mean if you push play on a sound on the "sound recorder" program that comes with windows 98, it wont even play the actual file.. like it doesnt scroll along through the soundfile.. it just does nothing.. and its like that in every aspect of the audio..

It has that nortons stuff running in the background I thought maybe that coulda been messing up so I disabled all of it.. I am really not sure what to think about this sound thing, I dont think it is a hardware problem, the speakers work fine, the sound card(crystal audio or something cheap sounding) works fine, it seems like it is some other problem...

it just wont actually PLAY a sound, not game sounds and not regular wave files or system sounds(which are wave files I realize), it wont play any of them... if you go to sounds in control pannels and press the play button to sample one of the sounds, the play button goes in, the stop button enables.. but nothing happens and the sound never comes on or comes to an end...

Like if I test a sound on my computer in the sounds control pannel, it plays sayyy ding.wav.. you press play,the play button disables, the stop botton enables, the song plays through till it comes to its end, then the stop button disables and the play button enables...

On their computer, you press play.. it just stays like its playing something but it never plays and never comes to an end... nothing freezes or anything, it just wont play...

Has anyone ever experienced this? does it sound like a windows 98 problem? I have a hard time believing its a hardware problem, even though I have heard alot of not so good things about gateway

It sounds more like the drivers need to be reinstalled.

I agree with shovel. The sound drivers obviously have some kind of issue. If you have the original windows CD or a recovery disk I would advise updating the sound driver. If that doesn't help, go to:

Username = Drivers
Password = All

Search for your soundcard and download the latest drivers.

check the back of the pc and make sure it is plugged correctly into the sound card and not the modem or microphone or line in connector usually on a sound card it plugs into the connector closer to the game connector or the farthest
