hey,
I get this error every time I click on the shares in "My Network Places"
(The drive or network connection that the shortcut " refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again)
after the second click the share opens...the error even happens on "add a network place"
this happened after I did all the critical updates with MS...it is happening on more than one computer....you guys are great and I hope there is a fix for this problem.

also after deleting the shortcuts in "My Network Places"...it is not refreshing or restoring the shortcut links to the shared drives

814112 - Files on Network Shares Open Slowly or Read-Only or You Receive an Error Message

In Group Policy\Computer Configuration\System\Logon, you could try Enabling "Always wait for the network at computer startup before Logon".

Please help - no one seems to know

303560 - My Network Places Shortcuts Made by Using Other Shortcuts Not Working

thanks Linney,
it did not fix the problem but I do have a work around...I don;t have time to post it tonight but will post later on

Ok here is the work around….Be aware it is a bulky work around and not the fix for the issue….I do not recommend this work around if you have a lot of shares.

*First delete all the share Icons to the computer that you want to connect to in the “My Network Places”

*Then go to the view workgroup computer and click on the network computer you are having issues with.

*Right-click the drive you want and “create shortcut”…this will place a shortcut on your desktop.

*After you are done creating your shortcuts….

*Go to this folder on your drive ( you might have to unhide it)
C:\Documents and Settings\user-name\NetHood

*Cut and paste all the shortcuts to the NetHood folder…..

Now your shortcuts in the “My Network Places” should work.

This workaround works for me because I do not have a lot of shares…

To reset the “My Network Places” to redetect the network drives you need to edit the registry:
And delete all the folders under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WorkgroupCrawler\Shares

When “My Network Places” redetects the network drives the error: (The drive or network connection that the shortcut“ refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again) will appear again

I will post later…as I find the fix for the initial problem and I do not have to use the workaround.
