My computer is getting slow at startup

I don't know why, but my computer is really slow when I startup

I have an athlon 1200 and 256 mb of ram so I think it's not so normal to start in 56 sec.

Can someone help me ??

make sure your hard drive is not full, reducing your paging file which slows your system down The only dumb questions are the ones that are never asked

Hi Greg,

Check your msconfig, uncheck those unnecessary startup programs.

Perform Scandisk, then defragmentation.

Click Start --> Program --> Startup
Remove all items from the Startup.

Lastly, check your config.sys, check to see if these things are added or not:

Config.sys

device=c:\windows\himem.sys
dos=high,umb
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems

Do a restart, go to dos, type "mem/c/p" without the quotes.

See if the available memory for use is at least 601KB and above.

I think it may ben my hard drive...

but someone told me my lan card could slow down my system too...

so if you have something abouit that that should be helpful.

Some times a lot of unnecessary stuff, such as messaging utilities and the like has been set to start up at boot-up. Go to “Start Menu>Programs>Accessories >System Tools >System Information” from the “Microsoft System Information” menu bar, choose “Tools>System Configuration Utility” Make a note of all the checked items (so you can restore them if necessary) then uncheck everything except “Scan Registry”, “TaskMonitor”, “SystemTray” and anything related to virus detection software. Obviously this means that some app’s that were running in the background may not be available unless you specifically launch them. Also the number of icons on your desk top affects the bootup speed.

as cited above, what is it?
is this virtual memory?

ive an old sys that is getting slower on boot, but hd is/was nearly full,both of them, but ive got a cdrw and am now emptying them, but no faster. msconfig is clean,btw.
