If I understand the question correctly you have missing root filesystem and no emergency boot disks.
Based on the question I assume you have 5.0.5 since there was a filesystem change from 5.0.4.
In the same position I would swap out the hard drive for a like sized one, reinstall 5.0.5 on the new drive, create an emergency boot set, reinstall the original drive and attempt to get the filesystem back.
Lacking success there, I would do a fresh install, take control of divvy, let it create the root filesystem only. But I have never been faced with the problem on 5.0.x so I'm not sure of the chances of success,
How about the specifics regarding OS and hardware and what error messages you have. [sig]
Ed Fair
efair@atlnet.com

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.
