Hi,

I'm not sure if this should be posted here or elsewhere, but Server 2000 seems like a broad enough category.
Here goes:

I've set up a Windows 2000 server with Exchange 2000 for mail.

I'm able to send and receive mail mostly fine. However, certain people are having problems sending mail to me. They get a bounce back with the following error:

It appears that the DNS operator for "domain" has installed an invalid MX record with an IP address instead of a domain name on the right hand side

I'm sure someone who's setup before will know exactly what this means, but I'm a little lost at sea with this one!

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

just be awear that it takes 72 hours for your DNS changes to propagate across the internet.

I haven't changed any DNS settings on my domain hoster's interface, so that is probably irrelevant.

Check the DNS settings on your domain host - make sure you hav an A record called Exchange for example that is set to the external IP address of your organisations and that the MX record's value is exchange

I switched hosting for my website and had the exact same error. TidyTrax is absolutely right. Create a A record for your mail server that points to the IP address of your mail server. Then create a custom mx record that points NOT to an iP address but to the domain name of your mail server i.e. mail.yourdomain.com.
