What functions functions does a multilayer switch provide?
What are the big differences between a multi layer switch and a switch? How much routing capabilities does it provide?

A Star to the person that answers these questions.

Thanks NG

Also does it provide the ability to configure access-lists?

ok mate, the biggest difference is a switch by default is Layer2 and the multilayer switch can do Layer3. there is basically a router inside this MLswitch. This MLswitch gives you a lot of routing capabilities, if not all.
Because of that you can also configure access-lists like on a router.
Its great to work with it.

CCNA, CCNP..partly ;)

So why would anyone want to use a router if a MLS is so great? What gives the router an advantage in routing when compared to an MLS?

Mainly because there aren't too many smaller l2/l3 switches that have serial interfaces in them for the WAN . The bigger ones like the 6500 you can get flexwan cards and this would replace any router .
