I was having a discusion with a co-worker today, he for some reason wants to place more than one engine into one of our 4506 switches for routing purposes. I fail to see why we would want another engine into the chassis if we already have a sup-engine IV already. Is this even possible, and if it is is there some benefit for doing so?
Even though I am the more experienced than he w/r to this subject, I dont pretend that I know half as much as I probably need too. Any advice ?

I'm fairly sure you can't build Sup resilience in a 4506. I think you need the 4507R to get that.

That said, Sup resilience is a good way to go (if your platform had supported it). My take on switches and resilience would be something like as follows:

No resilience = 1 switch with 1 Sup
Decent resilience = 1 switch with 2 Sup's
Good resilience = 2 switches with 1 Sup each
Excellent resilience = 2 switches with 2 Sup's each

Downside to resilience? It costs money.. sometimes a lot of it. You have to weigh up the cost of downtime to your business (in the event of switch and/or Sup failure) against the cost of improving resilience.

Ok, that answers my question. Thanks much.
