I have a Windows 2000 server that currently has Oracle 8.1.7.4 running on it. I want to install Oracle 9 to run alongside Oracle 8.1.7.4.

I tried it out and the databases seemed happy enough, but I had trouble connecting to them. Should I have a Oracle 8 listener and Oracle 9 listener running? Or just one version?

I would appreciate any help or advice in general on running multiple oracle homes.

thanks in advance.

You can have either

If you want to close connections to only one version's databases, then it is helpful to have 2 :)

My preference is to have one per version (i.e. 8 / 9 /10 )

We had a lot of problems with single 9i listener for multiple databases of different versions (8i, 9i). 8i worked more stable but we decided to start both. Don't forget that each listener occupies its own port exclusively.
