Multiple network card questions 1

I have a computer running Win XP Pro that has 2 network cards installed and functioning properly. The question I have is: is there a way to make each nic run a different protocol - not run all protocols listed? In other words I'd like to have 1 card run the TCP/IP protocol only (to talk to the internet and other TCP/IP devices) and the other nic run NWLink IPX/SPX protocol only (to talk to a Novell 4.1 server).

If I disable a protocol in one nic card's properties, it disables that protocol in both cards.

The reason for this is that when both cards are enabled, I end up with 2 logged in connections to the Novell server which I don't want.

Rather than disable the protocols, unbind them. Use the "Network Connections" display, highlight a connection, then click at the top "Advanced", Advanced settings, and uncheck the protocols you do not want bound to the adapter in the bindings panel.

I tried that idea. When I unchecked the protocol binding in one card it also unchecked the samed protocol binding in the other card. It doesn't make sense to me. I would have thought it should have made the bindings specific to each card.

File and Printer sharing? Yes on both adapters

MS Network client? Yes on both adapters

You will be unable to remove TCP/IP from either adapter, as XP views it as a core service.

But you can remove IPX from the WAN adapter but removing Client for Microsoft Networking and File and Printer Sharing.

I am thinking about a more flexible way to accomplish this task, so I will comment again later today. But you should not need either service bound to the WAN adapter.

I think I've accomplished part of what I'm looking to do by unbinding IPX after unchecking Client for MS Networking and File/printer sharing on adapter 2. However, I'm still unable to unbind the IPX on only 1 adapter. If I uncheck the NWLink IPX/SPX under the Novell Client for Windows on 1 adapter, it unchecks that entry for both adapters, and I still see 2 connections to the Novell 4.1 server. I guess that's the root of the issue; how can I unbind the IPX/SPX under the Novell Client for Windows on only 1 adapter. I can't uncheck the Novell Client for either adapter since one adapter is talking to the Novell 4.1 server (IPX/SPX) and the other adapter needs to talk to a Novell 6.0 server (TCP/IP). I apologize if I didn't make this as clear earlier.

You will not be able to simply unbind the protocol from one adapter.

What you can do for the WAN IPX protocol is set it to use an incompatible transport type. E.g. set it to 802.3.
