ie if I wanted to run:
1) Nightly full backup of Storage Groups to local disk. + hourly incrementals.
2) Nightly full "COPY" backup to tape drive over the network.
Sounds like you're trying to work out a disk to disk to tape backup scenario.
Imagine three drives x, y, and z. On even nights, a full to x is performed. On odd nights, a full to y is performed. During the business day, hourly incrementals are performed to z.
Now with a bit of scripting to clean up and scheduling to coordinate processes, a disk to disk to tape backup system is possible. It's kind of the Rube Goldberg version.
Why not get storage that supports snaps? After you complete a snapshot and verify, present the snap to your backup server and do an NDMP backup to tape. It's a lot simpler, and more reliable, and doesn't require anywhere near as much disk space.
