We have a Windows 2003 server, that has two external backup tapes attached to it. The reason being, is that, we are no longer able to backup all the drives on one tape. I was thinking I could backup C: D: and F: drives to one backup unit, and G: and H: drives to the other unit.

Anyway to do this with NTBACKUP? I don't see any switch that allows me to choose the correct backup unit.

(Yes, I know this is a silly way to do things, but I doubt management will spring $4000 to get a higher density tape drive)

With the /P switch, you can specify the name of the tape drive. I'm my case it's called 8mm AIT1. Hopefully you got two different tape drives with different names.

NTBACKUP or NetBackup? Since this is a NetBackup forum I will give the NetBackup solution. Define two "storage units" and use the storageunits in separate NetBackup policies. Another option is to use the over storage unit on the schedule definition. Either way you will still need to define two storage units.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and thats the truth

It's NTBackup....I thought this was the "General Back-Up discussions" forum. I'll try to put your solution into use on the NT side. I'm looking at "media-pools" and seeing how they work.

Thanks for replying!

LOL no problem. I think we all have posted to a wrong forum at least once :) Good luck!

OK...here is what I did.

Both of my tape backup units are part of the same Pool_Media. It will detect the first unit that contains a tape in the drive. So after backing up my first few drives, I do an Eject using RSM. Then, I do another backup command. Since the tape from the previous drive has been ejected, it finds the other tape drive, and continues to backup the other drives.
