Say if you just had an A4 printer. And you wanted to print out something to A3 size.
Printing to Tiles means that it would print out the A3 sized document on 2 pages, there would be crop and trim marks where you can basically trim the pages where they should meet and literally sellotape them together to show A3 artwork.
This would be an old make-up technique back in the day when nothing was output to paper first, but to film and plates, it would be the only way to join something large up for printing purposes, of course it would appear seamless on the final printed material.
