I have win 98 and Win 2000 pro on two partitions.
After aborting a WIn XP installation (which had only just started!) my boot screen now shows a choice of "Microsoft Windows XP professional" or "Microsoft Windows".

My Win 2000 still boots up fine when I select the first option but how do I correct the faulty title on the boot list?

I cant find a file on the drive containing those words.

Does anyone know where these OS names are dragged from when the OS choice boot screen appears??

It comes from boot.ini, a hidden system file in the root directory. It may be viewed and edited with Notepad. It is a read-only file, but you can edit by changing the read-only attribute.

Warning - edit at your own risk. Make a backup copy before editing. Change only the text that concerns you. Do not alter any other information. Reset the read-only attribute when you finish. In your case, since you are dual boot with Win 98, if you blow it and have problems, reboot and choose Win 98. Then bring back the backup copy to recover. If you can't reboot to Win 98, use a Win Start disk (you have one don't you) and boot to DOS. Then rename the backup boot.ini.

Additionally, here's a link with probably more information than you want to know about the boot.ini file.

There are even more links off this page which really get into it.
