I have a floppy that I'm trying to make into a Multi-Boot Disk.

I have created the floppy so that it has two choices.
(1) Boot to WIndows 2000 - Which is on the hard drive
(2) Boot to Windows 98 - Which is on the floppy
(This Windows 98 is only the command line version)

Here is what my Boot.ini file looks like

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=A:[operating systems]
A:\="Microsoft Windows"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000"

And of course I have all the files necessary on the floppy.
ntldr, ntdetect.com, command.com for W98, etc.

The Windows 2000 part boots just fine.
But the Windows 98 part fails.

It basically just reboots the PC if I try to boot to the Windows 98.

Any Help or Ideas? Or some third party tools that might help? ALL GREATLY APPRECIATED
I've tried boot.exe so far...didn't really work! :( Dave Namou, MCSE CCEA

What is the error the Win98 gives you?

It sounds like the COMMAND.COM is confused about where the \WINDOWS folder is.

Is the Win98 and Win2k on the same Partition? New Zealand, a great place to visit.

This is the error I get when I try to boot to the windows 98 Disk.
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Remember that I'm not supposed have a Windows folder because I'm just booting to the floppy. Windows 98 is on the floppy. It's just the command line version. Windows 98 is NOT on the hard drive at all.

Also, I have all of the above files that "Yizhar" mentenioned on the floppy.

Any Ideas??

This is not as easy as it looks.

The problem is that the NTDETECT is not happy with starting DOS (switching to using COMMAND.COM), and DOS won't start NT.

All the reading I have done on this says you need to have a BOOTSECT.DOS file to switch over to a DOS boot sector on your disk from NTFS.

But this doesn't seem to work with a floppy disk, all the documentation shows it only from a FAT hard drive.

I will have another look into it tonight.

I appreciate the help!! Thank you. Dave Namou, MCSE CCEA

Just a couple of questions and suggestions.

Is the file system you are using FAT(32) or NTFS?

If the hard drive is FAT(32) you can make a dual boot system then modify the BOOT.INI not to show the DOS boot. Then you can use a boot floppy to access the multi boot menu.

If you are using NTFS and will not be able to access the hard drive from DOS anyway so, why not just use a Win98 boot disk.

If you want to access the hard drive (and it is NTFS) you could make a Rescue Disk, it has a DOS like (more like Unix) command line enviroment.
