I have a strange problem on a Exchange 2000 Server. For the past 2 days The MTA service quits working sometime during the night. I have to manually start it and mount both stores and everything seems to be working fine. It happened again today.

Is this because the Exchange schedules some defrag on the Database and once it is done the service does not start??.

The Server is all updated with Service packs and critical updates. Also has Virus protection for Exchange.

Any ideas ?

Thanks for the Help

INT1973,

To the best of my knowledge, Exchange doesn't do a "defrag" by itself. Normally on is initiated by the isinteg command line tool. This would occur manually, not automatically. As to why your server is bombing at night, have you checked the Scheduled Tasks in the Control Panel? What about your event viewer, does anything seem to happen around the time that the service fails? Do you know what time it fails? What is the error code? Could it be the tape backup?

Something you could try to give you some relief until you resolve the root of the problem would be to set a recovery for the service. This can be done by right clicking on the service and going to properties, then clicking the recovery tab. Set all instances to "Restart the service" This should also give you the approximate time the service fails. Because when the service starts back up, it will force an entry in the Event Log that your MTA service has initiated.

I hope this helps you...

Great Idea. I never thought of that. I will give it a shot and keep you posted.

Thanks again!

Does any other exchange service restart with MTA stacks. there are couple of dependants in exchange that rely on the MTA function. Also I would check to see if you store is corrupted.
