I found the forum today through a google search after a week of trying to get into my MT3705 Gateway laptop it has a Windows passord on it that has been forgotten. I am to the point that I would rather take Vista Premium right off from the thing and install xp pro. The laptop doesn't even recognize the dvd/cd rom to use a bootable disk. I have been trying to make a bootable flash pen to use ophcrack or other password recovery or changer programs with no luck. I get the error message no kernal image found. I even tried to install linux mini me just so I could navigate on the computer and either install a pass. recover or changer program and still getting error messages. Sorry for the long post, but I am frustrated and at my wits end with this thing. Could anyone here tell me if maybe the dvd/cd rom isn't working because it is password protected and it isn't actually booting completely up (drivers and such for the dvd drive) and also suggestions or help to either make a useable bootable flash pen to install the pass wrd recovery programs, or how would I go about un installing vista and doing a fresh install of xp pro if I can't even get a darned program to work in the first place. Please, I am not an idiot although I feel like one right now. This thing has me pulling my hair out. I did find the information about the drivers very helpful if and when I can change out the os on the thing. I will monitor this thread carefully just incase anyone here can help. Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the BIOS to make sure booting from the ROM is enabled?

Yes, it was enabled and I have changed it back and forth from the cd rom to the flash hd to try different things. But there is an option there to change it.

Perhaps your CD/DVD drive is just broken?
