Been awhile since I have come across this one.
Compaq Windows 98
-Havent installed/ unistalled anything lately.
-If I remember correctly I can edit win.ini and look for possible culprit off a boot disk right? Ren out what looks suspicious?
-Cant get to safe mode

Yes - but your message suggests win.ini has been removed from your machine!

You can see from a bootdisk what's there in \windows folder. You could try running scanreg /restore (from bootdisk or command prompt - from F8 boot menu & select the most recent backup (scanreg restores system.dat, user.dat, system.ini and win.ini).

But it would be useful to know why its gone missing!

use a semi-colon (;) and a blank space to rem in win.ini.

Hello bErEsTh,

Download any dos-based virus scan, like f-prot. Boot the m/c to command prompt and run it. It looks like virus and a dammaging one.
