My daughters computer (old Gateway-running Win98)froze up,when rebooted,msgsrv32 message pops up, then the illegal operation box comes up. A Go Back (restoration program) was run now NOTHING comes up on the desktop, the "Close program" box on a ctrl-alt-delete is empty (???) If I try to restore the C drive, will anything come back or do I have to re-install Windows......how do I know how much of the current Windows is left? It looks like.....NONE? Can I just re-install from WIndows disk?

Can you boot into safe mode? If not you can just install over the exisiting windows installation without losing any data, though you may need to reinstall some applications after the reinstall.
As an fyi the msgsrv32 error that you had originally received usually indicates a corruption in the network drivers, and the best way to fix is to just remove and than reinstall the nic card drivers.
