I am doing a fresh install of Windows XP, not only do I have to put up with having to get rid of the Sasser virus shutting me down but now I find I am missing " msgina.dll"
I have no problem reformatting and starting all over again with the install, but how do i get around this dll file being missing.
Thank you in advance for any help............John

If you perform a fresh install I assume you are going to reformat the drive or at least reformat the OS partition. IF that is the case you should not have any problems. After you reinstall the OS just install your apps one at a time and check each one to see if one of them is causing your problem.

I have also read where PC Anywhere can overwrite this file with its own. If you are running PC Anywhere you may want to check with Check this article

If all else fail, reboot.

Thanks Andrew, will try again when I get home from work tonight, when it came up with the message about msgina.dll I had not even started installing any apps. Thanks again............John

When you do a new install you need to very quickly get a firewall up and then apply all the Micro$oft patches. Otherwise you will quickly get hit with all the viruses that go after the vulnerabilities in XP.

The built in firewall in XP (with the default settings) should be good enough to protect you until you get the critical patches. You go into the Advanced tab of the network connections to turn on this firewall.

Thank you OzCDN,what would happen if i do fresh install of XP disconnected to the internet.............John

If you are disconnected from the internet then you will of course be safe from any attack. Since most of the critical patches are for security reasons as opposed to serious bugs, you would likely run fine.

If you can apply all of the critical patches offline then you'll be in great shape but this takes a lot of effort (burning CDs, etc.).

I guess the moral of the story is just to realize that you no longer need to explicitly do anything wrong to be infected by a virus ... having no firewall and not having the latest patches is enough.

I would be tempted to use winnt.exe on another machine to download ahead of time the files required for the Dynamic Update section of install:

winnt.exe/duprepare:pathname
Carries out preparations on an installation share so that it can be used with Dynamic Update files that you downloaded from the Windows Update Web site.

Then when installing, make a local folder copy of the results from above, and specify during installation:

winnt.exe/dushare:pathname
Specifies a share on which you previously downloaded Dynamic Update files (updated files for use with Setup) from the Windows Update Web site.
