I remember hearing a while back from a reliable old timer tech that Nortel "doesnt recommend" using all 4 ports on an MSDL card.

Why... "dont recommend" is a horrible term. Either it works or it doesnt and if they manufacture 4 ports you should be able to use 4 ports, or it would be a 3 port MSDL card!

any inmput appreciated, i may need to use the 4th port today for a PRI (all ports on the card are PRI D channels)

I have had four Dchannels working on one MSDL card for years. Two are for point to point T1's, one is for a local call-by-call type and one is a Sprint LD. I'd rather have them on different cards, but that's what they were sold.

great to hear. im gonna give it a try later.

Earlier as I was going to config it, i kept hearing the voice of this guy i know saying "Nortel doesn't recommend using all 4 ports" so i was scared to do it.

Just remember to check the switch settings.

switch settings for what the MSDL?

Yes. The NT6D80 card that I have has switch settings. Take a look at Circuit Card Description and Installation (553-3001-211). I believe you'll want to set them for RS422 DTE. Compare the settings to the other ports on the card that are already working and print the Dchannel. Look at the PARM prompt. Of course, if you have to remove the card, make sure you disable everything on it and then disable the card itself.

gotcha-

yes im building dupe's of existing PRI's i have between my nortel and cisco PBX's

they are def RS422 DTE. Thanks though

the big thing on a msdl is the device number, if that matches, the system turns itself off. that is an interupt setting. ld 96 map dch and ld 46 stat aml. ld 22 prt adan and make real sure.. don't match device number on the same network... sorta a mistake you only make once

john what do you mean exactly about DNUM matching?

every port on the msdl has the same DNUM so how can you avoid matching DNUM's? Unless i'm misunderstanding what ur saying

ie: i have DNUM 10 (for MSDL 10)for ports 0,1,2,and 3

right, but if you add a MSDL or dch daughter board or paddle board then any matching device number can't match. you program all units on the same device with its device num. just when adding a new device do you need to not duplicate.. and as far as all ports on an msdl, depends on the usage, i have had to split one up due to excess traffic, but the 1st two ports had 20+ pri's controled by port 0 and 1.. nortel tech support said the ini's i were chasing could be caused by the over load/ all i had to do was use port 1 for a bdch instead of the primary on ld.. port 0 was the primary on my locals..sorry if my post was not to the point

Just as I was getting ready to program a d-channel on port 0, a colleague informed me that this was a no-no. So it sounds like this is a fairly common perception.

So as far as anyone knows, a d-channel on port zero is not a problem? What is the basis for the claim that it is not possible/recommended?

Thanks,

Michael

On an MSDL card, only port 0 can be used for TTY function (TTY, CDR, ACD), so your colleague may be thinking that port 0 should be saved for TTY.

If you do use it make sure to check the DIP switch settings. It comes from the factory set for TTY.

i have had errors on a dch card due to overload BUT i had close to 30 pri's on the 1st 2 and all 4 were primary. worked fine during test, but when traffic was heavy i got about 10 pages of pri errors then an ini. nortel level 4 tech support had me split them up, i still used all 4 ports but spread the traffic out. just spread your traffic out so that all of it doesn't hit the same card, the card can handle it, the bus can start dropping frames
