I installed MSDE2000 as new instance on a machine having SQL Server 7.0. I can connect to the MSDE2000 instance using the format MYCOMPUTER\MSDE2000.

However, from a second machine, I could not connect to the said MSDE2000 instance installed in the first machine. Why?

Both machines are running Windows XP Pro.

1. Firewall blocking the connection? XP SP2 turns on the Microsoft Firewall and the default blocks TCP Port 1433 which is default for SQL Server.

2. Permissions? Did you set up the SQL Server to use Windows Authentication ONLY or to use Mixed Mode? If Windows only, are the two computers on the same domain?

Hi Bill. No firewall since I could connect to the default instance (SQL 7.0). Mixed mode since I could connect to the new MSDE2000 instance if I log on locally using OSQL.

osql /S COMPUTERNAME\MSDE2000INSTANCE /U sa /P xxxx

The above command works locally but not from a remote computer.

osql /S COMPUTERNAME /U sa /P xxxx

The above command works both locally and remotely. It connects to the default instance running SQL 7.0

Do I need to set up the connecting computer to use alternate network addresses? Its mentioned in the BOL but could not find more info on how to go about it.

The default instance will be 1433, sure, everyone knows that. Since you have multiple isntances, the port will be defferent.

To determine the port.... Open Enterprise Manager, right click on the server (MYCOMPUTER\MSDE2000). Click properties. Click the 'Network Configuration' button on the General tab. Click TCP/IP on the enabled protocols list. Click Properties. The port number used by SQL Server (for the instance) will be displayed.

gmmastros, sqlbill. Seems that the network configuration for the new instance has its Named Pipes disabled. All worked fine when I enabled it.

Thanks gmm for pointing out where that Network Configuration was. So, that's why there's no Server Configuration Utility in the Start Menu.

Thanks guys.
