Hi

I am trying to get an installation of MSDE (Microsoft Data Engin) After installation, I can see the server running on the PC but can not connect to it (across the network from a PC with the proper tools - enterprise manager etc.) What login details (or how do I set them) do I use? Please help.

Regards,

SmithcZA

There are various reasons why you may not be able to connecto the MSDE from another computer. First, if you installed MSDE on Windows XP with Service Pack 2, then your firewall is on by default. MSDE defaults to using port 1433 so you should modify your firewall settings to allow traffic on that port.

When you installed SQL Server you set up the SA account. Log in using that account. Then create a new account for yourself and use that (using SA is bad security).

Everyone needs to be aware that this issue is not a NORMAL SQL SERVER ISSUE!

MSDE by default is NETWORKDISABLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THis means that unless you install it with the correct switch, you CANT CONNECT TO IT FROM THE NETWORK.

In other words the default install only allows for connections from the pc it is installed on [smile].

You need to open the MSDE install directory and find the readme.htm file (I think that is the name) and find the section on "Upgrading" or "Switches" - I can't remember how I found it.

Look specificly for the NETWORKDISABLED (maybe not the correct name) part and then add that switch and argument that enables it(0 or false- again can't remember exactly - been awhile)

THis should save you alot of time chasing blind leads.

Awesome. Now that you mentioned it, I remember reading that at one time. I think applying SP3a or SP4 resets it to networkdisabled even if you had previously enabled it.

I think I recall reading it in the Readme for SP3a.

I found it. Readme.htm for SP3a. Paragraph 3.7.4. The item is called DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS.

Find that switch and it will probably be set to 1, which disables the network protocols. Set it to 0 and you will be good to go.

NoCoolHandle - Thanks for reminding me of that. I gave you a star for it.

Sorry, I have the numbers backwards....

1 disabled
0 enabled.

There's a better description of it in the same document, but paragraph 3.7.3.

Hi All

I had the same problem, but could not reinstall the engine. Had a nightmare of a time finding out how to set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS off (because I could not access my server from another machine), and found an obscure note on the net pointing to the Server Network Utility ("C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\SVRNETCN.exe").

Now I have both MSDE and Enterprise Manager on my machine, so I don't know if this tool comes with MSDE. If any one of you guys has just MSDE on his/her machine, do you have this tool? If you do, just run it, add TCP/IP to the "enabled" list of protocols, and you're set.
