MSDE Issue

I have been trying to install a product called Handheld Contact as it synchronises to my contact database. It didn't work so I tried to uninstall. It errored and would not uninstall. I then tried to remove through the registry. It had sql instances installed. When I try to reinstall it tells me I need msde but hangs with a "MSDE Bootstrap.exe" process just hanging. So I attempted to load MSDE 2000A and it fails with MSIExec just hanging.

I know I have probably not gone about things the right way but can someone advise as to what they would do to try and correct or if I am even in the right forum?
