Hello!

A friend of mine had me check his PC because it took too much time to boot. i found out it had too many programs loading at startup. so i ran msconfig to diasable some of the programs that were not important. but there are a few programs i couldn't understand the meaning of. what is more is that everytime i disable them they sutomatically reloaded at bootup. can you please tell me why? the program are as follows:

Bridge rundll.exe “C:\Windows\System32\bridge.dll,Load
Dumprep 0 –k %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 –k
Pofguns c:\windows\system32\pofguns.exe
Ctfmon c:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe

1. For CFMON.EXE

2. For Dumprep

3. For Bridge.dll (seems bad news, put there by spyware)!

4. Pofguns I simply can't find anywhere and have never heard of

Did you try deleting the keys in the registry instead? MSCONFIG should list the location.

Also, have you cleaned the system of adware/spyware?

1.) install and run after updating the Ref File Ad-Aware 6.0 ...
2.) install and run (see above) Spy Bot Search & Destroy v1.3 ...
3.) update and run your AntiVirus proggy...
4.) run Hi-Jack This! ...
5.) run Spyware Blaster ( to innoculate the system...

PS - great links... thanx JrBeltman and Cdogg...

Also, if using Windows (assumed here), then make sure you have all windows updates before even messing with spyware/antivirus stuff (if possible), as some of those baddies take advantage of problems on your pc if they've not been patched by the most recent Windows patches. But definitely, make sure you are running antivirus (and firewall if on broadband) - and it's very very advisable to have a physical firewall/router (linksys is best for home/small business).

Also, if you downloaded any of those smiley central programs, and such as add stuff to your emails for free, they are likely plauged with spyware as well. Make sure you uninstall them before removing any spyware files, then remove any files left behind by running Ad-aware. Spybot search and destroy occasionally hangs on machines, and occasionally removes incorrect files, whereas Ad-aware is 100% safe (from my experience with many different machines). If you don't have antivirus, try AVG free edition at , and if you don't have a software firewall, try the free zone alarm at . Or if you want to buy one, Norton Internet Security has both antivirus/firewall, and has been the #1 provider for such for quite some time (some people may disagree, but it's more widely used than any other).

Keep in mind that Norton internet security has this awful thing that it slows down your pc. This is not by 1% but more like 75%.

It happens when going onto the internet and is a well know bug which they claimed they fixed, but people even on the latest version still have it.

Rather take Zone Alarm. Only good things have been said about this. However for virus scanning Norton is a very nice product.

Oh and yes, some countries build houses with other materials but stone. I will fix that in my signature. Any suggestions?

Suggestions huh...?

Maybe... the Virus/Spyware Forum????

There should be MORE than enough info there to solve these issues...

Good luck,

Yep, as mentioned, Norton does use a good bit of resources, but if you have a modern processor, and at least 512mb of Ram, you'll see no major setbacks with it. The only machines that I've installed it on where things really slowed down were ones where the CPU was 1ghz or less and they were only running 128mb SDRAM, not DDR Ram. If your machine would be in this category, then the free antivirus/firewall would be your best bet until you can upgrade the hardware.

Also, one other program you could try is regscrubxp. Just do a search for it on google, and make sure you keep it all one word. Of course, if you have Windows XP this will work, but if any other version of Windows, it will not run appropriately. It's pretty cool (it's free), b/c it scans the registry, and will make suggestions of things to "fix". If you fix anything, it creates a backup file, so that if you removed something that should not have been removed, you can restore the whole backup or that individual entry (if I remember correctly on the individual entry part).

Also, the advice for looking into the Virus/Spyware group would be a good place to look.

Also, I'd try just doing a google search on each of the files you listed above, and see what comes up - some sites, such as the one for the program, liutilities, will tell you right off as to whether each program/listing could be spyware/virus or not.
