I changed my boot up in msconfig to boot safe mode, normal. The problem is now I cannot log into XP Pro with admin rights or others...and cannot see the domain. When I change the boot.ini file in DOS, it disappears when I reboot.

What can I do without reinstalling XP Pro??

I cannot log into safe mode from the log on prompt. I am only able to work in DOS to modify.

when I try to edit boot.ini in DOS, it can't find the file. I then create the file in C:\ in DOS, only when I reboot...it is no longer there??

Have you tried this command from the C:\> prompt:

attrib -r-h-s boot.ini

Can you be more precise as to what you did in MsConfig and the resulting problem you have now?

I set msconfig boot.ini to safe mode, minimal....obviously this won't let you log into the system except as an admin

Your logon would have to be a local console logon, as a locally defined user. Administrator would work.

Did you change it to Safe Mode / Minimal or Safe Mode Minimal (Alternate Shell)?

Are we talking about Full MSDOS that you have booted to via a ME Startup Disk (or similar) or is it the XP Command prompt that Safe Mode has presented to you?

If it is the latter see if typing Explorer at a prompt helps, or see if you can bring up Task Manager.

Unless you know the Administrator password for this machine your options are rather limited.

Using the Bart PE program from the earlier link will give you Administrator access to the machine's hard drive, as would removing the hard drive to another machine.
