I have just downloaded and applied the latest patch from Microsoft which "fixes" an Uncheck Buffer in MSN Chat Control. Bad mistake.

It seems that many programs now crash and report "invalid page fault in module NEGOTIAT.DLL at 0167:03a43e43".

The programs affected on my machine are:
MSN Messenger, Trillian, Outlook Express Newreader, Opera Newsreader, Netscape Newsreader, and Mozilla Newsreader.

I would advise against applying this patch to you system, unless someone has any idea why this is happening, or how to stop it from happening.

I have asked friends to send on their copy of NEGOTIAT.DLL to me, but nobody seems to have it on their system. I have searched all of my client machines for the file, but again to no avail. Was NEGOTIAT.DLL added with the new security patch?

NEGOTIAT.DLL file details:
File Version: 5.00.2195.1
Description: SPNEGO Security Providor for Win9x

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks. Ahdkaw

This problem was solved for anyone who cares. Click the link to 'Complete Thread (5 articles)' here to see how.

Here's a portion:

"Argh, oops! What an idiot I am! :(

This is where I actually got the download from:

I've just had another quick scan of MS02-022 article, and noticed that I
didn't download the patch at all, but in fact d/l'ed the latest version of
MSN Messenger instead (under 'Download Locations for Updated Software
Versions')...

Is there any way to return my system to it previous setup so I can download
the patch instead?"

Hello again!

Okay, I managed to solve my problems quite easily actually.

I uninstalled MSN Messenger, rebooted, renamed the file to
negotiat.dll.old, restarted my Trillian chat proggie, and it worked
without a glitch!

My newgroup readers are also now fucntioning correctly."

Thanks for that Kento!

Those posts were actually mine, and I was about to post them here too, but you saved me the hassle.

Much appreciated. :) Ahdkaw
