ms word files could not open

Hi gurus!
I have some word files (MS office XP) that I want to open with linux word processor. I tried but could not open. If it is possible, how to do? Please, help me.

What word processor were you using, what were the error messages.

OpenOffice opened most documents for me (doc, xls, ppt) - but I only get msOffice-files very seldom from others.
I haven't tested a 300 page document with embedded pictures, footnotes, automatic paragraph-numbers etc., pp.
