MS Word Customize Numbered List Issue

MS word 2003 SP2
Does anyone know of a way to increase the amount of text that you can type in to the number format field located under Bullets and Numbering-Numbered tab-Customize button? It is limited to 29 characters + the auto number.

If I type "RESPONSE TO INTERROGATORY NO. 1" it will remove the space between NO. and 1. So it would look like NO.1 with no space.

Hi,

You can't increase the number of leading characters. However, depending on whatever external constrainst you're working under, maybe you could approach the problem laterally and replace "NO." with "# ".

Unfortunately, using # sign is not an option. Does anyone have better way of approaching something like this in place of using bullets and numbering. At times there could be hundreds of these types of entries that need to have auto numbering, because they insert and cut all the time.
