MS Word: Cant see embedded/linked item only the tag 1

I have inserted an embedded item / hyperlink into word and for some reason I cant see the link or the image, only the tag. For example, I link to winamp on my desktop and it gives me: {HYPERLINK "D:\Data\Winamp.lnk"}
However, when I switch to the reading view vs. the normal, print, outline, and weblayouts I am able to see the image. I have tried this on other peoples machines and it works fine (and we have the same version of word). It is really iritating me b/c I want to be able to link a file to automatically update but its difficult when I cant even see it. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
