We have a user who has a 99 page word document. When he prints to our HP Laserjet 4500 Dn (colour laser printer) which is duplex capable. The output is ok to page 8 where it changes the long edge binding to top edge binding. If we start printing from page 9 it will print ok for 8 pages or so and then switch the from long edge to top as before. It then continues this arrangement to the end of the document or to the last page of the range selected. The document has been checked for formatting and appears to be ok as far as page breaks and section breaks and fonts etc are concerned. We have tried from Word 98 and from Word 2000. We have tried printing it from different print servers. The drivers on the servers were the same. We have sent the .doc to a Konica printer and it prints perfectly. Any ideas please?

1. Word 98 is for MAC. Are you using MACs?

2. Are there SUPPOSED to be any landscape pages in the document?

3. What happens when you print preview? Same?

4. Are you sure that the driver you are using is for your printer AND your operating system combination?

Thank you for your response/.
1. Word 97 not 98 - sorry.
2. Yes - there should be landscape pages.
3. Driver is the correct driver for the printer and operating system. HP Color Laserjet 4500 PCL 5c.
4. I hadn't tried print preview until you suggested it - thanks. Unfortunaeately with the 4500 printer set, print preview is fine.

This word doc used to print perfectly for the user. The only physical change we have made is to double the memory in the printer. Could this be the problem? No one else has any issues printing word, excel, acrobat, jpegs etc to this printer.

Then I don't understand what you mean by statements like "long edge binding to top".

Because that's what landscape is.

You say the printer is duplex, but are you printing the document duplex or one side?

Is the document set up for duplex pages? If it's 99 pages, it does not have an even number of pages and makes me believe it may not be set up for duplex.

On our duplex printer, a Konica, the paper is set to A4. If you take a sheet of A4 and hold it in portrait form then you have long edges on the left and right hand sides and short edges on the top and bottom. The document is set up to be inserted into a ring binder and read like a book. The initially selected 8 pages are fine. From then on, if you were to imagine the pages in book form, portrait format, the page on the right is the correct way up but when you turn the page over the page on this side of the paper is upside down. I am sorry if I have explained this in rather a long wided way. As for the 99 pages, the document is updated as time goes on. The reason being that it is the binder presented to new starters when they join the comapny. Next year it may be 100 pages.

We solved the problem by dumping the printer which required an expensive repair. We traded it it in for a Xerox Phaser Colour printer. Thanks to all who responded.
