Hi,
The Windows update KB article says that if I have any of the operating systems in the list, (which is any MS OS going back to Win 95, I think, and includes XP Pro), then I "definately, positively, no-question-about-it, must surely" have the Windows Virtual Machine installed, and therefore need a security patch for it.

But when I go to run/cmd/Jview I get the response that there is no such valid command, which the KB article says means that I don't have the VM installed.

So now, who do I believe, Microsoft, or my own eyes?

Do I need this security patch, or not?

Hi,

Works fine on my XP Pro SP1 workstation.

Are your environmental variables correct?
if you search for 'jveiw.exe' does it exist?

If so, change directory it to the folder containing the jview.exe file, and try it from there - if that works you need to add that folder to you variables...
Thanks, Mark

Which security patch???? If it's a recommended security patch, is there a valid reason not to install it?

if you are talking about Java VM, then NO it does not have to be installed at all!

Reason: Due to the Lawsuit from SUN vs. MS, MS had to leave out the badly programmed Java VM starting after SP1 (which still included it), SP1a and above DO NOT HAVE IT... instead it is recommended to use the JAVA supplied by SUN (v 1.5.06)...

I believe you are talking about the patch 816093?

It's not a necessity if you aren't running MS Java.

I think most of the stuff I've run across has it in there, so it wouldn't hurt to update. SP1a and above doesn't have it, but from what I've found out, upgrading from below SP1a (installing SP2 update for example) will not necessarily delete the MS Java either.

If you don't have need for it, you can try running the old MS Java uninstall tool (MS doesn't distribute it anymore, but can be found here):

Open Internet Explorer.
Tools, Internet Options, Advanced

Are there controls shown for Microsoft Java VM? If so, it is installed.

You don't really want anything to do with Microsoft Java VM (unless it is absolutely necessary to you), it as not been updatable for years and is probably riddled with security flaws and holes.

If you require Java visit

Hi,
From the additional tests you all have provided, I now know for sure that I don't have the MS Java VM installed.

This system was updated to SP2 from an original SP1 installation CD, which I take it from the above information, must be an SP1a distro.

Yes, the KB816093 article and critical level patch came to my attention by using the MS security patch search page, in which I specified XP Pro, SP2, and "critical" level, and received a list of needed patches going back to 2004. This was the oldest item in that list.

Now I know, though, where I should go to get Java if I ever need it.

Thanks, everyone.
