MS Office Doc Image to Text without loss of formatting

I am using MS Office 2003.

I have been supplied documents saved in the mdi format. The images open and display formatted within MS Office Doc Image application, yet if the "send Text to Word" function is used all formating is lost.

Is there a download or other function that can at a minimum preserve data columns. These files will need to be edited within Word or Xls and are made up of up to 7 columns across an A4 portrait page.

I know nothing of MDI but in excel you could use data,text to columns to split the data back into columns.

The send to text does just that. The text. Essentially, a OCR. No formatting information is there to be sent. It is an image.
