Just got a call from a friend related to his recent upgrade from Office 2000 to Office 2003 on his XP-Pro sp2 machine.

Seems he can't open old office docs. He is able to create new office docs but can't reopen them.

Apparently, Excel tells him his virus software won't allow it. In Word he's getting a message related to templates. (Haven't seen the messages so I can't " them. )

He's scanned his computer with his antivirus using updated defs and found no problems. He's also uninstalled the antivirus but received the same messages.

Anyone familiar with this type of issue? and a solution?

With the antivirus unistalled try running the detect and repair in office.

Where are the old documents stored on the PC?
Has he checked the permissions of that folder(s)?

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

Should have permission, he's the admin on the machine and he can save new files to the same location. He just can't open files.

I suppose if he inadvertantly set the path as write not read. Problem is he hasn't changed the path of the existing files and he could work with them with Office 2K.

I'll have him perform the 'detect/repair' and see what happens.
