I tried to install a new MS IntelliMouse (v3.0, optical, not wireless) onto a Compaq Presario running Windows XP Home. The mouse is connected to my PS/2 port. I ran the CD that came with the mouse to install IntelliPoint 5 - no problems. When the PC reboots the mouse is not detected. I tried to re-install the mouse & got the following error message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)" There is no specific file listed. Here is what I've already tried:

1. Connected other mice (a 2-button MS mouse, a Belkin wireless, & Logitech optical) & ran their respective software to install all configuration data.
2. Copied over all driver files from Compaq Recovery CD into C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ to ensure all were present & in their default state.
3. Reran mouse software CD to assure files were copied correctly/completely.
4. Norton Systemworks detects no problems.
5. Ran Regclean.

The following drivers are listed under Driver Details for the mouse: i8042prt.sys, mouclass.sys, point32.sys, & ipcoin2.dll (in system32 folder). All drivers are digitally signed by MS.

I now have no working mouse on my PC. Help me?!? I don't believe it's 1 of the drivers itself, but maybe 1 of the related binary files or something in the registry. I can't find any info regarding which file/registry entry might control this for the mouse. Is there any way to bring all related software, drivers, & registry settings back to their default (original) state? What files control mouse drivers/configuration/function? Any tips on fixes or diagnostics are greatly appreciated. I need to use a PS/2 mouse on this machine, as I will soon be installing a KVM switch to be able to access a Linux box.

Thanks for any help,

Try going to "Add/Remove programs" and remove all mouse drivers. Shut down. Plug in a standard mouse and boot back up, Windows should recognize the standard mouse. If this doesn't work, you may have to go to Safe Mode > Device Manager and remove ALL references to the mouse.

I've been poking around some more & found the following entry in my System Event Viewer:
-----
Event Source: lsermous
Event Type: Error
Description: the hardware resources for are already in use by another device
-----
Any thoughts on what this might be pointing to?

Micker377, how do you specifically remove drivers in "Add/Remove Programs"? I thought you could only remove entire applications there. I'll look into that also tomorrow evening. Thanks for the tip.

lsermous is the driver for the Logitech Serial Mouse.

If you didn't uninstall the other mouse software (ie you have 3 mouse software packages installed simultaneously) this is likely to be a cause of conflict.

I uninstalled all mouse software packages (2 of them) & did multiple reboots (hard & soft ones). Mouse was never detected or installed. Then I re-installed the MS Intellimouse software - same error message as in my 1st post (Code 39). Here's the kicker: on a whim I uninstalled the MS software & re-installed the Logitech software. Now my MS Intellimouse is detected @ bootup & works! Unfortunately I can't configure all of the buttons as I'd like. It appears that the Logitech software/drivers have somehow created a dependence on them to have any mouse functionality. Any other ideas on what the heck is going on here & how to correct it?
