MS Exchange 5.5 Service will not start

My organization's Exchange server locked up somehow today.

One of the services will not start up:
Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service

When I try to restart it I recieve an error message:

"Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error or an internal service error..."

I've messed with it for an hour, any help would be appreciated.

job down all info, then delete it, then re-add it back by going into File/New Other/Internet Mail Service. Configure it same way you had it.

Where do you find this File \ New Other \ Internet Mail Service?

Clarification:

When viewing the Connections tab in Exchange 5.5 and trying to access the Internet Mail Service item, it throws an error saying:

Extension SMTP could not be loaded.
The module cannot be found.

Does this mean that the SMTP service has been uninstalled somehow? I see it present in my services list.
