Newbie question..

I'm trying to set up user/group security for my MS Access application but I notice that:

1. The users I created stays with my machine and not the *.mdb file.

2. When I went back to the program, it never prompt me for a userid / password.

3. How can I capture the username and insert into a table field?

With Access security, user and group accounts are stored in the Workgroup Information File, also called the System Database. The default WIF, system.mdw, is installed with Access. It is not secure, and cannot be made completely secure.

You need to create a new WIF, using the MS Access Workgroup Administrator, then "join" that workgroup and put your user and group accounts in that. Then you set permissions, distribute the WIF with your database, and train the users to "join" your workgroup. It's a long and complicated process, actually. The easiest and best thing to do is to use the Access User-Level Security Wizard, available from the Tools>Security menu. Read carefully.

If you need strong security, you really should spend a couple of days studying the help docs and experimenting with test databases and WIFs. If you don't get it just right, Access security can leave you with the appearance of a secure database, while in fact it's full of gaping holes.

For your last question, the CurrentUser function will return the user name from Access logon, once you have activated the logon function.
