I have one hard disk divided into C, D and E. Win98 is in C. I would like to move the swap file (virtual memory) from C to E. Will that slow my system?

Yes
leave it on C:\ if possible - the other partitions are nearer the center of the platters....best speed is obtained via utilizing the outer portion of platters, where the RPMs are highest

Although it depends on how much RAM you have installed, and whether you have the "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" entered in the Sytem.ini file under the [386Enh] heading.

With a decent amount of RAM - >255Mb seems a good figure - and that line added to system.ini you probably won't encounter any swapfile usage unless opening a large number of image files in Photoshop or some similarly memory intensive operation, therefore the slower access times of the HDD on the second partition, as correctly pointed out by TekTippy4U, may not be a practical issue under these circumstances, with the swap file simply being held in reserve, if you like, for occasional use in such 'emergencies'.

Regards, Andy.
