Hi All:

We upgraded from NT to 2003 AD domain about 8 months ago, while still in the mixed mode (one more NT BDC), the PDC which got upgraded to Windows server 2003 is aging and slowing, I wonder if anybody can provide suggestion on how to move the main domain controller (since we are still in the mixed mode, PDC-Enumuerater). to a new server then we can hopefully finally plan for the total switch to native mode (2000 or 2003)

Thanks
XM

What you might want to do is buy a new server (better hardware). Install this server as Windows 2003. Join this server to your existing Windows 2003 domain.

Run DCPROMO on the new server to make it an additional domain controller of the existing domain. Then transfer the FSMO roles to this new server.

If you want to get rid of your old Windows 2003 server, run DCPROMO on the server. This will start a wizard that will remove the DC role from the server.

Then you can take both your old Windows 2003 server and the BDC offline.

and for global catalog... its a checkbox on the server object, found in AD Sites & Settings management console...
add a new GC and wait a day or two before removing the GC setting from your old server...

basically, each time you change something like in your Active Directory... wait a good day or two before continuing with sth else...
