To set the scene...

I have recently performed an in place upgrade from NT4 to W2K AD, to upgrade I put in place a temporary PDC Emulator running on a desktop PC.

I would like to now build a new resillient server add it to the new AD domain, run DCPromo and add as additional DC. I then need to move the FSMO roles so I can turn of the PC.

I can find how to move the RID, PDC and Infrastructure roles from the Operations Master in AD users and Computers...but I can't see how to move the remaining 2 roles - Schema Master and Domain Naming Master.

Is it a case of once the old PC is shutdown the new server will just seize the roles?? I'd prefer to do it in a more planned way!!

Any help appreciated...

Run DCPROMO on the desktop after having DCPROMO'd a new server into the domain. When you DCPROMO the desktop out, it will gracefully transfer it's remaining roles to the other DC.

When changing the domain naming master the dc you are transferring to must be a global catalog server.

To change the domain naming master open AD domains and trusts, then right click on ad domains and choose operatoins master. Then choose change.

To change the schema master you have to have the schema snap-in. Basically the same thing, once you have the snap-in running right click on AD schema and choose operations master.
