I've set up a new server on my company domain, using Win2003R2. I have managed to make it the PDC, which makes the old server (which I am replacing) now a BDC. More info on that is here:

Now, I have a PDC with Exchange2003SP2 installed on it, and a BDC with the same that has been and stil is our primary mail server. I want to move the Exchange information, including all mailboxes, (we use IMAP, so everything is stored on the server, about 3-4GB), to our new PDC. I tried using NTBackup to back up and restore onto the new server, and that was the wrong answer... What do I need to do to get everything in Exchange transferred over to the new server so I can decommission the old one?

Thanks in advance!

No such thing as PDC or BDC.

Exchange on a DC is not recommended. And, you cannot promote or demote a server once Exchange is on it.

However, if you're forced to use it that way anyways, and you're willing to live with the issues it creates, the definitive document on what to do is easily obtained by Google:

I actually reffered to the document he SHOULD be using PRIOR to doig an install. Since data is not moved yet, it's not too late to start clean.

Use ldifde to export the users and there Exchange information from AD. You'll need to modify this info in the exported text file to re-home the mailbox store in the new environment. Then use EXMERGE to export the PST's, and import them into new Exchange store.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

OR - just move the mailboxes to the new server - (Right Click -> Exchange Tasks -> Move Mailbox)

Once completed, uninstall Exchange from the old server, and your done.

If you plan to grow, your current setup is a recipe for disaster...

Interesting, I did not know that you could not demote, or promote a DC once Exchange is installed. Good point. Always learning something new.

But you have to do MUCH more than just move the mailboxes before yanking a box.....
