We have Domain Controller on old server fully patched up-to-date. We want to replace this with brand new server. Everything should be same (hardware and drivers will be different). Can I restore (offline) the backup (backup of old server in safe mode) to new one after installing basic W2K ? Any other suggestion welcome. Thanks

I would suggest not doing that. I think that you would be better off building the new server and integrating it into your domain, then rollover the services from the old server to the new server, then finally removing the old server from the domain. While all the hardware and everything may be the same, there will be some things, such as a MAC address that will be different. I think that you will get a cleaner install this way and it would be the way I would do it.

Thanks, I was thinking my way as I have licenses server installed on DC. MAC address have no problem as I will restore OFF LINE. Thanks a lot for help.

1. build new server with all service packs / hot fixes, ect.
2. join new server to domain.
3. run DCPROMO on new server to make it a second DC.
4. give a little time for AD to catch up with the changes.
5. check DNS for SRV records and make sure zone info is correct.
6. move DHCP (if using) to new server. verify all is well
7. run DCPROMO on old server.
8. check that new server is a GC and all FSMO roles have transfered.
9. copy any data files need from old server to another server.
10. unplug old server

Thanks a lot you two. I'll busy on it this weekend.
Have a nice weekend.

Step 3.a for the above is to set the new DC as a Global Catalog (GC).

I prefer to transfer the FSMO roles manually in case there are problems, it saves from having to Seize the roles.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
