Due to lack of space I need to move all mailboxes and public folders from one server to a new server.

How can I work how long it will take to move all the data from one server to another?

The sizes of the database are priv1.edb 8.8g, priv1.stm 7.9g, pub1.edb 6.9 and pub1.stm 5.9g.

The servers are both compaq ML570R connected to same switch via Intel pro100 n\w cards. One has 1g of Mem the other has 4gig.

Elliot,

If you already have an exchange server running on the second machine, you can use the MOVE Mailbox operation from within active directory.

You can take about 1,5x the time of doing a normal file copy of the size of your stores.

If you have to setup and configure the second server as an exchange server from scratch, consider about 2 hours for full configuration in the same organization as the existing one.

I hope this helps; feel free to answer further input if needed.

Peter

Thanks Peter

I need to build a new exchange server. This problem has arisen becase the company I have started working for has no email poilcy. I had attempted rebuilding the server with the new disk but I have been having troubles mounting the database after a restore. Therefore I thought it would be better to build a new exchange server and move the data.

The timing is a concern as the hardware I will be using for the second exchange server is our file server (with the new exchange disks in place instead). I need to try and work out if I can move the databases in a weekend.

I know that it depends on size and amount mails in the mailboxes will affect the time it takes and was wondering if anyone had moved mailboxes and knew roughly how long it would take to move. What will take longer a one gig mail box with 5000 mails or a 500mb mailbox with 10,000 mails? How long roughly will it take (30 mins, One hour, 4 hours)????
