Movie could not plat

Hi gurus!
I am new in linux field. I have FC2 in my home computer. I tried to play video songs (with ext. .dat and .avi) but it could not play on it.
Could someone please instruct me how to play it?

How are you trying to play them? What application are you using? Are you getting an error message.
