I've moved a mailbox via the ESM Exchange Tasks Move Mailbox process to a different Exchange 2003 server in the same Administrative group.

If Outlook is running while I do this - it pops up a message asking me to restart and works fine. It seemed to modify the profile automatically.

If outlook isnt running while I move the mailbox, it errors everytime I start it. Why, in this case, doesnt Exchange modify the profile/redirect the user to the correct server?

Must I reconfigure my clients Outlook profile?

I've never done it while outlook was running. I thought that it was bad juju to do it while the client was open. I've always had the client closed and as long as the old server where the mailbox used to reside is running, the profile was always redirected to the new server.

OK, I tried this again. Didnt work right away but may have been an AD replication issue. After a while, I tried again and it worked fine.

Thanks!

If Outlook is running; it pops up an error message saying roughly: the administrator has made changes that require a restart of outlook. A restart then works correctly.

Now then... if the old server is down... say FOREVER... a DR scenario; obviously it won't redirect. Could I simply map the DNS name to the new server? (at least temporarily.)

I don't *think* so. I do belive that Outlook is actually redirected by the old exchange server. Old server basically says to the client "hey dude, your not here anymore, your mailbox is over here" client says "great, thanks" and makes the change. I don't honestly know what would happen if you just mapped the name in DNS. It might actually work, but I'm not sure if exchange would do the redirection correctly as the client, as far as the server is conserned, is talking to the correct server. Don't know for sure. It would be an intresting thing to try but I wouldn't want to leave it as a perminant fix. Don't know what kind of issues it might have.
